Google Updates Search Toolbar

Article from Official Google Blog :Two months ago, we announced our plans to roll out a new design for the Google bar. Our goal was to create a beautifully simple and intuitive experience across Google.

Based on your feedback, we realized there were some elements of the new bar that we could improve, and with that in mind, we’re introducing an updated version that we believe will provide a better experience.

The new design retains many of the feature changes we made in November that proved popular, including a unified search box and Google+ sharing and notifications across Google. The biggest change is that we’ve replaced the drop-down Google menu with a consistent and expanded set of links running across the top of the page.

Google Search Toolbar Changes

We'll be rolling out this new version of the Google bar over the next few weeks. In the meantime, we invite you to read about the new design in our Help Center, and send us your feedback.

Yahoo with 6 more Country Alliances

For Yahoo, the deal with Microsoft is the single most important part of the big picture business plan. With Microsoft now running the back-end of Yahoo’s search, not to mention the search advertisements, the alliance is a major opportunity for Yahoo to decrease the cost of operations. Meanwhile, because Yahoo is reimbursing Microsoft for transition costs and forking over 12 percent of the search ad revenue, the deal is also costly. One of the most clear things is that the search alliance will become less costly once it’s complete. At that point, Yahoo will be able to drop its back-end support in countries where Microsoft hasn’t yet taken the reigns, and transition costs will no longer be deducted from the total company income. So it’s good news for Yahoo that the transition to Microsoft has completed in another six regions. Those six regions are Argentina, Chile, Colombia, New Zealand, Peru, and Venezuela. Several more regions in both Europe and Asia are slated for a transition to Microsoft, while Yahoo Japan sticks out as an exception; they will be transitioning back-end and ad services to Google. Every area where Yahoo transitions these key search elements will have functionality and interface options customized to the unique needs of the region. In its second quarter earnings report, Yahoo discussed the importance of these transitions, noting a large chunk of their cost of operations that could be blamed directly on transition reimbursements and other fees that would soon dissipate. The company predicted that the remaining regions will be fully migrated by the end of 2011. source
According to a recent report by the StatCounter web analytics firm, Google Chrome is on track to pass Mozilla Firefox’s number of users by December of this year. Unless Mozilla Firefox, which is the world’s second-most used browser in the world, can put an end to Chrome’s rapid growth rate, the Firefox browser era may be coming to a close. The report indicates that since January of 2011, Chrome has captured an additional 8% of the global internet browser market share. This increase, which represents an astounding 50% growth rate, has increased Chrome’s total market share from 15.6% to 23.6%. The simultaneous growth in Chrome’s market share and decrease of both Internet Explorer’s and Mozilla Firefox’s market share indicates that Chrome’s growth is at the expense of its competition. During the same time period that Chrome was rapidly growing, both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer were shrinking. Since the beginning of this year, Mozilla Firefox has fallen to 26.8% of the global market share, a drop of four percentage points. Although Internet Explorer fell four percentage points during the same time period, is remains the most-used browser in the world with a market share of 41.7%. In an effort to compete with the rapidly growing Chrome browser, Firefox has accelerated its development process and now releases a new version every six weeks. However, it does not appear that the “rapid development” strategy is preventing Firefox users from defecting to Chrome. If Firefox wants to prevent fulfillment of StatCounter’s prediction that Chrome will become the world’s second most used internet browser by the end of the year, Firefox must take measures to prevent additional users from making the switch. source

As part of the Yahoo-Microsoft Search Alliance, Yahoo! has been transitioning the backend for their organic search to the Microsoft search platform. Search results for Yahoo! are already aligned with Microsoft for the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico, while expansion to the rest of the world is expected before too much longer. Apparently API access will shut down on September 15, 2011, so it's unlikely to be much longer before Site Explorer officially disappears. According to Yahoo! Site Explorer will shut down once the transition of organic results in all markets to the Microsoft Search platform is completed, which is expected later this year. source

Google Chrome has recently implemented several changes that aim to improve the overall browsing experience of each user. Here's a quick rundown of what they've updated.
  • Implemented support for hardware-accelerated 3D CSS which allows web developers to apply 3D effects to website content.
  • Chrome now warns users when downloading malicious files. This is on top of their safe browsing features that protect against malware and phishing websites. Google assures Chrome users that Chrome will be doing all these without tracking what sites you visit or what files you are downloading.
  • Users can now delete Flash Local Shared Objects (LSO) directly on Google Chrome which increases your control over your online privacy.
  • Chrome features preliminary support for screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver which are highly useful for the blind or visually impaired.
  • Chrome has removed the Google Gears plug-in, to maximize the use of HTML5.

IPv4 Transition to IPv6

What is IPv6?

IPv6 or IP version 6 is the next generation Internet protocol which will eventually replace the current protocol IPv4.  The primary difference is that IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses as compared to the 32 bit addresses used with IPv4.  Among other things, this improvement is expected to make assigning addresses to wireless devices easier and accommodate the myriad smart network enabled devices that will surround us in the future.

Filipinos from across income groups are now adapting to Internet and mobile usage. The Philippines became the texting capital of the world, surpassing in one day all the texting that is done in the European Community in only a year.  According to a study done by the Internet marketing research firm ComScore.com, the country is also the world’s fifth most engaged social networking community.  The study also found that Philippines is the fifth heaviest user of social networks  like Facebook, Twitter, etc. in the world, averaging 6.2 hours logged in per person.  Actually the Philippine figures could be higher, since the study did not measure traffic from busy access points, which are  Internet cafes and mobile phones. Philippines is a leader when it comes to Internet access,  Smart Communications said it served 8.3 million subscribers through its nationwide broadband and cellular networks. Also Smart Broadband, the company’s affiliate, serves over 1.3 million subscribers, while 7 million more access the Internet through Smart mobile phone subscriptions.  Reports in www.internetworldstats.com, stated that the country had close to 30 million Internet users. Another study conducted by Synovate showed an increasing percentage of Filipino users purchasing goods online.  The study also found that Filipinos access the Internet from their home for the upscale and older users or from an Internet cafe, mostly for younger and lower-income users.  The study noted that Filipinos  access the Internet mainly for communication and searching for information. The growth of Internet access in the Philippines presents a lot of marketing opportunities for local and international companies as well.  The Northern Officeis a marketing consultancy firm specializing in innovative marketing support for SME’s.  TNO provides an array of services like Sales support, Online Marketing, Social Media, etc.  The Northern Office can help you create an effective Online Marketing plan.  Contact us for details.

Google Instant Goes Mobile

The Google Instant Mobile update was initially released on November 4th,  allowing English language users to access the instant search features released for the web earlier this year from their mobile devices.  The thirty-five day globalization of the product added twenty-seven languages, and access from more than thirty new countries.  No one expected that the release of this product would be so soon. Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type.  The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you do not have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search”.  Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback.  You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. The update is automatically integrated into Google search features that are accessed via any Android web browser, and is available for Android OS version 2.2 and up. It has also been released for the iOS4 (Apple’s latest iPhone operating system). Benefits:
  • Faster Searches: Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search. By predicting your search and showing results before you finish typing.
  • Smarter Predictions:  You might not know what you are looking for exactly at times, but predictions help guide your search.  There is a top prediction shown in grey text directly in the search box,  so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need.
  • Instant Results:  Just start typing and results will appear right before your eyes.
